PEI Resigns IIGA
Press Release from Kay Batty, Secretary, IIGA
Dear Friends,
Sadly Prince Edward Island IGA has taken the decision to resign their membership of the International Island Games Association. I received their letter of resignation on 30th May which reads as follows:
"It is with deep regret that IGA PEI tenders its withdrawal as a member of the International Island Games Association
. It has been a very difficult decision to make, but given the past attendance of IGA PEI in 2009 and our having to withdraw our teams for this years 2011 NatWest Island Games, we feel it is the only honourable thing to do.
We are extremely grateful for the support provided to IGA PEI over the past years, and most specifically in the last couple of years as we have attempted, without success, to convince the present Provincial Government of the importance of their support, from a financial aspect, to assist athletes in the costs to attend this athletic and fellowship opportunity.
We wish the very best to all of you as the Isle of Wight hosts this year's NatWest Island Games and congratulate whichever Island is chosen to replace PEI.
Once again, we have enjoyed our membership and are proud of the success that the NatWest Island Games has become, a true accomplishment in the name of fellowship and sport at the highest level.
On behalf of the Board of Directors of IGAPEI
Alfred V. Groom
President"
We are very sad that Prince Edward Island has decided to leave our Family. They will be deeply missed by the rest of us.
A news release to this effect will be placed onto the IIGA website this morning together with the following additional paragraph:
Although the Association reached it membership limit following the acceptance of Menorca into the Games Family, several Islands have expressed interest in joining and the withdrawal of Prince Edward Island could, if the membership so wish, mean that a new island can be accepted into the Family. However this will be a matter for the new Executive Committee to look into in the months following the Closing Ceremony of the NatWest Island Games in Isle of Wight, Jorgen Pettersson comments.
Kind regards
Jorgen
