Doug's Diary #3
Dear Diary,
Yesterday afternoon, Mike, Shirley, George, Gerald, Mum & I went to watch rugby 7's.
It was fast & furious, 7 minutes each half - it does not sound a long time to score, but there were some impressive scores. We watched Wales Vs Samoa, Samoa beat the Welsh convincingly, Scotland Vs Kenya. Scotland got a winning try in the last seconds of the game. Those games were plate games.
The Semi Finals of the Medals were between England Vs New Zealand, the All Blacks stuffed England 33-12. Our Lawn Bowlers enjoyed that game more than we did! The other Semi was between Australia Vs South Africa. The Springboks put up a cracking fight, but the Aussies were too strong. Kiwis Vs Aussies Final, my money is on the Kiwis!
After the Rugby, Mike, Mum & I headed out to see the semi finals of the badminton.
First up England's top mixed pair, Nathan Robertson & Jenny Wallwork Vs the second Malaysian pair. The Malaysian pair were a young pairing & looked out of sorts as th English swept them away in the first set, however the second set went to the Malaysians, which set it up nicely for the 3rd. It went to the wire, 24-22 in the English's favour. They play the Malaysian top pair who were not seeded, but they do have Koo KK who is the top mens doubles player in the world at the moment. Liz Cann of England took her semi to a 3 setter but lost in a very exciting & close match. Lee Chong Wei, worlds number 1 singles player, swept aside the Indian Cheten Annan, with ease. He has not been pushed to the his limits as yet. Raj Ouseph of England played the other Indian Kashak, Ouseph losing the first set but overcoming the crowd & opponent in the next 2 sets, he won the final point on a smash down the line, the line judge called it in, but apparently it was out by an inch or 2.
The silence from the Indian crowd was deafening, silence then turned to booing, not sure if it was directed at Raj or the linesman.
Mens doubles Nathan & Clarky of England took on the Singaporean pair Mike & I lost to in round 1, the Singapore pair played out of their skin, showing the skill only top class players can show whilst under pressure. The English won 2-1. But were pushed in every game. They play the worlds number 1 pair of Malaysia Koo & Tan. If I was a betting man I would put money on the Malaysians, they look awesome!
Saina, the Indian ladies Singles player was on, but we left. I would think she would have won her match & will play the Malaysian she beat in the team event final tomorrow.
