FIRS Games Report #5
MS: This was a shooting day and badminton and bowls are finished. As I mentioned yesterday, some of us went out to the shooting range where the full bore shooting takes place and Gareth and Derek were shooting over the final distance of 1,000 yards. They had a bad experience in the pairs. They were shooting on the target that was possibly dodgy and didn't score very well – they scored 54 each.
The nations who then shot on that target afterwards had equal problems as did the Australians. The Australians were allowed a re-shoot and we weren't. It was under protest when we came away, so we didn't have a great day in the pairs. We were going to shoot the singles afterwards and we were quite late with that so it was a bit of a messy day at the full bore range. It was great to go out and support the guys in numbers and they really appreciated it, and it's quite an impressive place.
At the pistol range, Karen Middleton was in action. She had been ill for a few days and so probably wasn't at her best, but she scored up around 300 where she might have expected to have been. That left her quite a long way behind the next competitor but she did her stuff and that's fine. Steve shot his second day of skeet and, again, didn't have a good day. He was scoring around 15 when he would have expected from his performance in training to be up around 20 so he is personally disappointed with that. That's life, I guess.
The last day of competition and nothing at the moment to crow about unless Gareth and Derek do well in the individuals. Their performance this morning left them in 17th place ahead of St Helena, Antigua, Bermuda and Barbados but behind one or two countries that they might want to be in front of. They are personally disappointed for that but I think it's really a technical issue.
SB: As you said it's the last day of the competition for the Falklands. How would you sum up the Commonwealth Games from the Falklands' point of view?
MS: I think it's been a very good games for us.
We brought quite a large team – a larger team than we brought to any other games. A lot of people have performed right up around their very best and some have exceeded their best. The team have all performed very creditably in terms of pushing the Falklands forward, talking about the Falklands, making friends in their own disciplines and with other people.
I think our team has been quite popular around the village. Certainly our little pin was exceedingly popular and everybody wants the Falklands' penguins. Apart from the sporting side, which we tend to concentrate on in these updates, I think from a projecting the Falklands prospective the whole team has done creditably well and many people have commented on the quality of our athletes and how well they have done considering the circumstances that they come from.
A very good games for us; we are very pleased with everybody.
