Welcome to the first edition of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games on a day that marks exactly six years or 2192 sleeps, until the Opening Ceremony in Gold Coast City on 4 April, 2018. Whilst it might seem like a long journey ahead, there is much to do in the planning and delivery of a Games of this magnitude - the biggest event Australia will have seen for more than a decade! We look forward to sharing the exciting milestones and adventures towards 2018 with you and hope you enjoy this quarterly publication that will update you with developments at Games HQ in beautiful Gold Coast City.

WELCOME GAMES MINISTER

Following the recent Queensland State Government elections Premier Campbell Newman has announced Gold Coast Member for Currumbin, Jann Stuckey as Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and Commonwealth Games. Soon after her 2004 election as the Member for Currumbin Ms Stuckey was appointed as Shadow Minister for Tourism, Fair Trading and Wine Industry Development. Re-elected in the 2006 state election Ms Stuckey has held a number of Shadow Ministries including Child Safety, Disability Services and Mental Health Policy: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Community Development, Public Works and Information and Communication Technology.
Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Chairman, Mark Stockwell said he was delighted with the appointment and was looking forward to working with Minister Stuckey to ensure delivery of an outstanding event in 2018.

FROM THE BID TO THE OC The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Bid Company finished operation after a highly successful outcome in 2011 and has now emerged in 2012 as the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation Organising Committee (OC). The efforts, enthusiasm and expertise of Bid Chair Mark Stockwell certainly didn't go unnoticed and he was appointed by former Queensland Premier Bligh to lead the OC as Chairman. His appointment was followed by that of the Bid CEO Mark Peters, to take up the position as CEO, Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation.
Joining Mr Peters, seven staff from the original bid team have also commenced varying roles with the OC, bringing with them solid relationships with the Commonwealth Games Associations and a broad knowledge of the Gold Coast Games plan, Commonwealth Games Federation requirements and expectations to deliver a great event in 2018.
By the end of 2012 the OC will employ approximately 30 staff which will gradually increase to 1000 - 1200, with the bulk of the Games staff being appointed from 2015. All roles will be advertised extensively and detailed on the Games website.

GLASWEGIANS PUT THEIR BEST FEET FORWARD!
In celebration of 'Commonwealth Day' on the second Monday each year and in support of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, Glaswegians were encouraged to wear their runners to work, school or wherever they were on the day. The 'Sport your Trainers' campaign saw more than one million people pledge to support the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. To show support from Gold Coast City, CEO Mark Peters and Manager CGA and CGF Relations, Melissa Price joined 2010 Commonwealth Games marathon silver medallist, Michael Shelley for some training tips before he heads to London to compete in the Olympic Games.
And for those that didn't know... Commonwealth Day is the annual celebration of the Commonwealth of Nations held on the second Monday in March. Whilst the day attracts minimal public awareness in Australia it is marked in the UK by a multi-faith service in Westminster Abbey normally attended by the HM Elizabeth II, the Commonwealth Secretary General and Commonwealth High Commissioners.
In the year before the Commonwealth Games the Queen starts the Queen's Baton Relay on Commonwealth Day at Buckingham Palace, handing the baton to the first relay runner to start the journey that will end at the opening ceremony of the Games.

THE GAMES TEAM PROFILE - GAMES CHAIRMAN, MARK STOCKWELL
Appointed Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Chairman after successfully leading the bid team in 2011 Mark Stockwell has had a long and illustrious association with sport - as an athlete and representative on several significant Boards.
Managing Director of Stockwell, a development, construction and property management group Mark was born and raised in Queensland. He spent much of his youth swimming competitively and studied engineering and commerce at the University of Queensland, and economics at the Australian National University in Canberra while on a swimming scholarship at the Australian Institute of Sport.
Mark went on to win two silvers and a bronze medal in the 1984 Olympics and a gold medal in the 1986 Edinburgh Commonwealth Games and during his swimming career held numerous Australian and Commonwealth records in the 50m and 100m freestyle.
He was part of the bid committee for the 1996 Brisbane Olympic bid, was an Ambassador for the 1988 Brisbane Expo and is a former Board member of Australian Swimming.
Mark spends his time between Gold Coast City and Brisbane with wife, American three-time Olympic gold medallist Tracy Caulkins and their five children.
